Speculation abounds as to the creation of the Centaur, the mythical human-
equine hybrid. The most widely held belief is that Belphegor created the
Centaur to serve as intelligent beasts of burden that required neither
driver, nor handler, and were completely self-sufficent. Belphegor
however, erred, and made his beasts too intelligent, for they revolted
under his cruel ministrations and fled to Pastoria with the assistance of
several captive elves. On Pastoria, the Centaur have found a home,
maintaining a close friendship with the elves and other people of the
sylvan woodlands to the point that they have become the unspoken guardians
of the deep woods, preventing intruders from entering the sacred valleys of
the Sylvan Court. Other myths exist, but the relationship between the
Centaur and the sylvan people, and their unusual form lend high credence to
this story.
Centaur are massive, powerful creatures, combining the intellectual
faculties of the human with the power and endurance of the horse. Thriving
within the secluded glades and valleys of Pastoria, the Centaur live in
close harmony with their environment, carefully conserving their natural
resources and maintaining this precarious balance. This association with
Nature has created a close bond between the Elven people and the Centaur,
and they are always welcome at a Centaur's lair. Fiercely loyal to their
family units, the tribal Centaur are very distrustful of outsiders, and
will deal with trespassers according to the threat posed to the tribe.
Requiring tremendous amounts of energy to fuel their massive bodies,
Centaur are prone to excesses of food and drink, which often makes them
rowdy and aggressive, making them less appealing to those unfamiliar with
Centaur behaviour. Their massive frame and multiple limbs likewise give
the Centaur difficulty when required to manuever with great coordination.
