Every army has its footsoldiers. Most often they were poorly trained,
ill-equipped peasants forced into battle by their master, or else face the
penalty of death. These poor souls were used for fodder, softening up
the enemy's defenses so the more valuable troops could walk in unscathed.
Belphegor created the Drokan for this exact purpose. Drokan made the
perfect footsoldier, wading into battle with little care for their own
welfare. Every battle, Drokan were cut down by the thousands, but they bred
rapidly, so the losses were no concern to Belphegor. Occasionally, a
brilliant Drokan (one that could count past three) would realize his death
was guaranteed either by desertion or tomorrow's battle, so he would
abandon his post, knowing at least there was a slim chance of survival if
he could escape unnoticed. Over the decades, small communities of these
outcast wretches have developed throughout Animus. Slowly, the Drokan have
found their way to other lands, often peforming the vile tasks most
civilized people would rather not do. Even though they are considered, at
a minimum, second-class citizens, they rejoice at their freedom, and
willingly perform even the most demeaning tasks.
Drokan are a thing of nightmares. Their ebon flesh melts into the shadows,
so you never see one until its claws begin to rend you apart. The Drokan
which still serve Belphegor are ferocious, mindless killers, happy only
when their leathery skin is awash in the blood of their enemies. The
Drokan who have found homes elsewhere have lost much of their predatory
nature, however they have been known to lose control and revert to the
ruthless killing machines they were originally programmed to be, rending
foes with a speed and savagery sure to turn the bowels of the most
veteran warrior. Even when not enraged, the Drokan are difficult to
communicate with, their intellectual development having ended where most
children's begin. This simple nature allows them to easily be taken
advantage of, and many an unscrupulous person has tricked them into using
their darker talents for evil purposes.
