As the embodiment of the irrepressible spirits of curiosity and mischief,
there are few people of New Home that would suggest that Kender are
anything but Lila's children. The other Four often grew tired of her
childlike demeanor and impulsive behaviour, and none of them liked being on
the receiving end of her tricks, especially Belphegor and Ananke (although
Tingel and Phrixus want to admit they enjoy those pranks in particular, but
dare not, lest they encourage her). Tingel was okay, but she acted too
grown up most of the time, and Phrixus just wanted to be left alone with
his plants. Belphegor and Ananke were just plain mean. Lila needed to
find herself some new friends, friends that would understand her. Then one
afternoon, Lila learned about Tingel's creation, the Humans, and she
immediately wanted some of her own... yesterday. Lacking the patience and
refined skills that Tingel used in performing the rites, Lila grabbed a
handful of Earth, and a pinch of Fire, and just a smidge of Air, and tossed
it all into a big bowl of Water. Muttering a lot of fancy magic words like
"Abracadabra" and "A la kazot" and "Hocus Pocus" she skipped around the
bowl and with a "Pop" a "Wizz" and a "Poof" a large cloud of bluish smoke
appeared, causing the bowl to disappear. Coughing and gagging, Lila fanned
the smoke away and squealed in delight. She had made little Humans all by
herself, but they kind of looked like Phrixus, and were kind of small for
Humans. They were Kender.
If curiosity killed the cat, it slaughtered the Kender wholesale. No
matter how hard a Kender tries, no matter the steps one takes to avoid it,
trouble always finds the Kender. Where a Kender goes, chaos is almost
guaranteed to ensue. It is not that the Kender seeks to cause distress in
others, it just seems to happen that way. In part a result of their overly
inquisitive nature, the main reason Kender incessantly find themselves "in
it up to their topknots" is their utter lack of fear. For some reason,
Kender seem to lack the common sense to realize most everything can squash
their wiry little bodies without a second thought. Not surprisingly,
the most common cause of death for a Kender is recorded as "Accidental."
These small bodies have prevented the Kender from becoming powerful
warriors, but what they lack in toughness, they make up for in speed and
audacity. Kender make for interesting company, they are pleasant,
exceedingly witty and have more stories about their Uncle So-and-so than
you could shake a stick at. So long as you keep close watch on your
valuables, a Kender can be the most charming and adorable companion one
could have on a long journey. And at least you can guarantee the journey
will never be dull.
